Stellarium Review

Sven Sorensen
A beautiful 3D planetarium virtual view of the night sky from the PC with over 600k star systems
A review of Stellarium by Sven Sørensen

For stargazers in the city or those without a telescope, welcome to the world of virtual telescopes. Stellarium is a free program which gives you a virtual planetarium directly on your PC monitor.

The program opens up a window to the night sky giving you the ability to navigate the stars and planets without an expensive telescope. Although it's not a replacement for enthusiasts, it gives your average Internet browsing something to look at.

Stellarium gives you the option to choose between night and day and includes a catalog of over 600k celestial bodies. It also includes various facts. Users of the program may also add their own content.

All in all, Stellarium is a really cool desktop program which gives you a neat view into the night sky with pictures taken from telescopes in space and on the ground.

Stellarium features and highlights:
  • Catalog data for all New General Catalogue (NGC) objects
  • Images of almost all Messier objects and the Milky Way
  • Artistic illustrations for all 88 modern constellations
  • More than a dozen different cultures with their constellations
  • Solar and lunar eclipse simulation
  • Photo-realistic landscapes (more are available on the website)
  • Scripting support with ECMAScript (a few demo scripts are included)
  • Extendable with plug-ins: 8 plug-ins installed by default, including:
  • Solar System editor plug-in (imports comet and asteroid data from the MPC)
  • Default catalog of over 600,000 stars
  • Extra catalogs with more than 210 million stars
  • Asterisms and illustrations of the constellations
  • Constellations for 15 different cultures
  • Images of nebulae (full messier catalog)
  • Realistic milky way
  • Very realistic atmosphere, sunrise and sunset
  • The planets and their satellites
